The challenges
Stadtwerke Düsseldorf is a municipal utility company. The company supplies electricity, natural gas, drinking water, and district heating. During the last years, Stadtwerke Düsseldorf profited from HRForecast services multiple times while facing different workforce challenges.

How HRForecast supported Stadtwerke Düsseldorf
All three conducted projects had different backgrounds and targets. However, they were connected through the same fundamental approach: data analysis, predictions, and simulations.
How to plan the space and the room distribution of a new head office efficiently? How to save costs and recognize the possible spatial planning scenarios? In the first joint project, we investigated these questions. We carried out calculations regarding the use of newly planned head office space, bottlenecks, and space potentials. Next, we identified employment development and related space requirements. Ahsan Shahid, the project lead from HRForecast side, explains:
“We calculated possible room losses due to hierarchical room distributions. Then we considered such factors as part-time employees or organizations of the meeting rooms, and we modeled different workforce distribution scenarios among the office. We made our recommendations on the office’s efficient planning and showcased the possible savings using mathematical calculations and simulations. It was a fascinating project to work on as it is not a typical solution from our portfolio. However, the math and data do not know any boundaries and apply to various use cases.”
Strategic Workforce Planning was another integral project. For this task, we calculated workforce development outlines for various business scenarios. Then we translated these scenarios into workforce requirements, thus showing top management where the workforce risks lie and suggesting how to act accordingly.

To effectively plan and meet the company’s demand for labor is what every organization strives for. The most recent project helped Stadtwerke Düsseldorf to foresee precisely how much labor force of particular apprenticeship professions will be available on the market within the next ten years. This project enabled them to plan their workforce along with its recruiting needs accordingly. How did they accomplish this result?
This project used various simulation models to predict the apprenticeship development from 2024 to 2030. Additionally, we forecasted the growth of school leavers at specific educational institutions. The project also determined the degree of recognition/attractiveness of selected occupations. We gained insights into the labor market competitors for the same apprenticeship occupations by analyzing the job postings.
