May 20 is an International HR Day, when companies across the globe can take a chance to recognize this role and the contribution HR professionals make for employees and organizations. Apparently, HR industry combines professionals dealing with numerous people management aspects, from talent acquisition, retention, and developing employees to managing workforce planning, dealing with people analytics, initiating talent agility practices, and so much above and beyond. Yet, whatever people management aspect it may be, people are at the heart of it.
Working closely with notable HR experts, we want to celebrate their passion, dedication, intelligence, and aiming for continuous improvement. On this day, we’re glad to share a portion of inspiration from a few notable professionals who we asked: What’s the best thing they love about being in HR?
“When thinking of any company transformation, 70% of your success is fully linked to People – I just love to be part of the teams that are shaping the future by enabling humans to make the change happen. I couldn’t ask for a better job purpose.”
Ana Gloria Sanchez, Global HR Digital Lead at Bayer
“HR matters – it has real purpose. It brings together human potential and business performance. When you get it right, you’re part of an organisation full of buzz, energy and confidence as well as success for all your stakeholders. HR adds huge value – not just operationally, but in building a powerful people agenda to drive business performance. Right now, organisations are rethinking their business models at the same time as people are rethinking where, how and even why they work. It’s a great time to be in HR – your work has huge impact.”
Deborah Wilkes, Consultant, Coach & Author, Enable-HR
“At this moment I work for KPMG as a HR strategy consultant with many clients. Working for more than 20 years in HR, I love the evolution of the relevance for our role and profession. Nowadays we are (or need to be) able to guide board decisions around the Work of Future with knowledge about the right Workforce of the Future.
As I see now, every organization is in a different phase as it manages its way through a pandemic and through a faster changing client demand. Because of this, some organizations are in survival mode, some are planning to rebound from the crisis by reshaping their portfolio to align to new customer needs. And each company have to take steps in order to jump-start their operations, business processes, talent management, organizational culture, and so much more will have to adapt and change in order to thrive post-COVID.
Questions like, do we start with the processes, systems, tools, skills, knowledge, behaviors, or the structure(s) to meet our business objectives and/or what can we do in parallel are current questions were we can excel as HR professionals. Our HR role is and was how to embed these changes to prevent them from snapping back to business as usual.”
Alex Baggerman, Workforce of the Future Lead at KPMG Netherlands

Jennifer De Maria, Senior Talent Market Researcher at Shopify
“I’m passionate about Leadership and Organizational Development. Aligning people to their leadership strengths and aligning the people experience to operational plans, while ensuring we are all moving in the right direction – together. I define HR as “Lifting others up so they can lift their teams” and I feel privileged to be able to serve in this capacity every day.”
Shefali Mody, Principal Learning & Development Leader at One Medical
“HR is the function inside of organizations that is the “secret sauce” or “superpower”. I love coming into a company that has never experienced true strategic and business alignment from the practice and blowing them away with how we can partner to grow revenue.”
Stacie Mallen, ARC Talent Expert
“Despite my Team and colleagues, the best thing I love about being in HR is to have a direct impact of creating positive experiences for people every day!”
